Elijah Wood has likened the Lord of the Rings trilogy to independent films.
Wood, who played hobbit Frodo Baggins in Peter Jackson's adaptation of the JRR Toklien novels, said that filming in New Zealand lent an independent air to the series.
He told PopEater: "Oddly enough, as massive as it all became, it was still a group of people that had spent that intimate time together in New Zealand. It kind of felt like a weird travelling circus, like a family travelling around the world promoting the film.
"We felt isolated there. It felt like the world's largest independent film. It was a massive behemoth but because it was made in New Zealand away from Hollywood it felt like we were in our own world."
Wood reprises his role as Frodo for a cameo appearance in Jackson's prequel, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, which is due for release in December 2012.
