Soft Cell singer Marc Almond is said to be fighting for his life after a motorbike crash in central London.
The pop star suffered severe head injuries after being thrown off the back of the bike when it collided with a car.
Almond, who was riding pillion on the Suzuki, landed on the road along with the motorcyclist who was seriously hurt.
The 45-year-old underwent surgery at the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.
Witnesses reported hearing "an almighty bang" when the bike hit a Vauxhall car at a junction near Cannon Street station.
Police are investigating. A spokesman said: "There were quite a lot of people about at the time so we should have lots of witnesses."
Soft Cell had a No1 in 1981 with Tainted Love. Two weeks ago the band were forced to call off a tour after Almond suffered a hernia problem.
