Mary J. Blige says "God sent her husband" to help save her life.
The R&B star has been open about her struggle with depression, alcoholism and drug addiction and thought she was going to die at one point in her life.
When asked what saved her from ending up like tragic soul divas Amy Winehouse and Whitney Houston, the No More Drama singer credited her faith and her husband Martin Kendu Isaacs, her former manager, for helping her to turn things around.
"I got to a point where I felt I was going to die if I did not get my life together and I just prayed and I asked God for help. I asked him to send me a person that would help me and he sent my husband, who is my friend also, and he sent him with the information that can put me on the right track," she told UK TV show Daybreak. "Because I came from an environment where people just didn't really care about you. And when you first get into the music business everyone is a yes-man and no one wants to tell you the truth. And he was honest and is still honest and helps me to be a better person."
Mary also spoke about working with Tom Cruise on her new movie Rock of Ages.
The star has made guest appearances on TV and starred in small supporting roles in a number of movies but the big-screen adaptation of the musical hit is her biggest project so far.
But the singer explained she was incredibly grateful for Tom's words of encouragement on set and, in turn, told him what a great singer he is.
"I was so shocked and surprised to hear him sound like the record! Wow, I'm impressed. I just kept telling him, 'I can't believe how amazing you sound, I didn't know you could sing,' and he was like, 'You're doing great with the acting,'" she said. "Everyone was so supportive on this set and Tom was supporting all of us and fuelling us all on. Because, you know, he is Tom Cruise. He is Tom Cruise and for him to support us and help us the way he did me; that meant so much to me, he'll never know how much."
