The 30-year-old wanted to move to LA and pursue a career in showbusiness at a young age so legally distanced herself from her parents aged just 15.
And now the Blue Valentine actress admits it was Hollywood stars who influenced her decision to get emancipated.
She told British newspaper The Times: 'What teenager doesn't want total autonomy if they have the chance? I got the idea from reading about it in the papers.
'At the time there were a lot of kids in Hollywood and in the news doing the same thing.'
Drew Barrymore, 35, is an example of a star who filed for emancipation from her parents at a young age.
