Motorhead for meltdown

Motorhead and The Jesus and Mary Chain are among the musicians who will appear at London's 2007 Meltdown festival.
Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker has put the line-up together as artistic director of the two-week event, which is taking place at the Southbank Centre in June.

Cocker said: "Together we can make a week that you will remember for the rest of your life."

Previous Meltdown directors include Patti Smith, Morrissey, David Bowie and Nick Cave.

Cocker, who will play at the Royal Festival Hall on 23 June as part of Meltdown, has also drafted in Iggy & The Stooges and The 13th Floor Elevators for his shows.

He said: "Culture should be a stimulant not a sedative. Hide beneath the duvet in your plasma screen, surround-sound, MP3-enabled crash pad if you like, but we will find you and we will wake you up.

"By combining things that shouldn't be combined, by looking at things from a different angle, by the use of extreme volume and frequencies - by any means necessary - we shall rouse you from your slumber. And, you're going to love it."

Motorhead will open Meltdown at the newly refurbished Royal Festival Hall on 16 June. The festival runs until 23 June

The Queen Elizabeth Hall will see the first UK concert in 30 years by cult singer-songwriter Melanie, who performed at the Isle Of Wight Rock Festival in 1970.

Hal Willner's Forest of No Return will see dark reworkings of songs from the Vintage Disney Songbook, featuring performances by Cocker and other guests.

KPM Allstars, formed to commemorate the 60th birthday of the library music label, will perform TV theme music on 17 June.
