Fans of emo band My Chemical Romance came together at Marble Arch in London today in a peaceful protest over coverage of the band by the Daily Mail.
The national newspaper has attacked the emo scene and My Chemical Romance in particular for supposedly glamourising suicide and even promoting 'death cults'.
In a attack similar to the moral panic which blamed the Columbine massacres on Marilyn Manson, the Daily Mail has been drawing links between the band, known for hits such as 'Kill Your Friends' and 'Famous Last Words', and a spate of recent suicides by teenagers.
Outraged fans came together to protest against the accusations that their favourite band promoted suicide. Held outside the Daily Mail's offices, the fans denied that the band, fronted by Gerard Way, had a negative effect on vulnerable teenagers and criticised the press for trivialising depression.
