Neil Young has announced details of the release of a deluxe version of his surprise new covers album, A Letter Home. It's pretty beautiful, check it out above.
The album, Young's 35th, was released last week much to fans' surprise. Produced by Jack White's Third Man Records, A Letter Home also contains two songs featuring Jack White, even though a spokesperson for Young previously denied rumours that he would appear on the album, saying: "We are certain those rumours have no basis in truth."
The album was recorded using a 1940s-era Voice-O-Graph recording booth, and features covers of songs including Bruce Springsteen's 'My Hometown', Bob Dylan's 'Girl From The North Country' and Willie Nelson's 'On The Road Again'.
Speaking of the recording technique, Young compared the Voice-O-Graph to "a phone booth", adding: "You can make a lo-fi, analogue record, direct to vinyl, transfer it to 192, and you have a high-res copy of a lo-fi vinyl record."
Now, Young has revealed the super deluxe box set version of the album, featuring an expanded edition of the record, with two vinyl LPs (a standard version and an 'audiophile' version), a CD, a DVD with comments from the producers and engineers, seven (yes, seven) vinyl 6" singles, a download of the audiophile version, and a 32-page booklet.
One of the singles features a cover of Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind" and an alternate take of Willie Nelson's 'Crazy'.
