New Model Army drummer dies

New Model Army drummer Rob Heaton has died.

Heaton, who left the band in 1998, died unexpectedly on November 4th. An inquest concluded he was suffering from pancreatic cancer.

Heaton co-wrote and performed NMA songs such as ‘Poison St' and ‘Here Comes The War', and wrote the music for the anthem ‘Green And Grey'.

He left the band in the late nineties suffering from a brain tumour, choosing after his recovery to promote live music in his hometown of Bradford. ‘Fresh Milk' was his last scheme, in which he produced low-cost high quality live recordings for young bands.

He also composed film scores for independent films, and released music under the pseudonym ‘Gardeners Of Eden'.

A note on the New Model Army's site said 'It is with great sadness that we report the sudden and unexpected death of Robert Heaton on Thursday November 4th. A multi-talented instrumentalist and song-writer, Robert joined the band in 1982 and for the next fifteen years co-wrote many of the band's greatest songs, including being responsible for all the music to the anthem “Green & Grey”. A consummate professional when it came to recording and performing, in public Robert was the powerhouse behind the rhythm driven sound of New Model Army.
