New York Dolls guitarist dies

Arthur Kane, bass player for New York Dolls, has died in Los Angeles of Leukemia. He was 55.

Kane was part of the recent reunion put together at the request of Morrissey of London's Meltdown Festival. New York Dolls played together for the last time only last month.

New York Dolls formed in New York in 1971. Kane was the original bass player with David Johansen on vocals. Other original members were guitarist Johnny Thunders (died 1991), guitarist Rick Rivets and drummer Billy Murcia (died 1972).

In the mid 70s, the group hired Malcolm McLaren as their manager. He went on to manufacture the Sex Pistols later in the decade.

The band broke up in 1977 and stayed that way until a few weeks ago. David Johansen went on to have two successful solo carries, both as himself and as alter-ego Buster Poindexter.

Johnny Thunders formed The Heartbreakers but died of a drug overdose in 1991. Jerry Nolan who replaced original drummer Billy Murcia died of a stroke in 1991 at the age of 40.

The recent line-up featured Johansen, Rivets replacement Syl Sylvian and Arthur Kane.

The reunited line-up recorded new music for an album expected to surface later this year.
