Celebrity Favorites: The Kangol Kid
UTFO's Kangol Kid knows a thing or two about female MCs. The hip-hop veteran and his collective scored their big breakout with the hit "Roxanne, Roxanne," and they also notched some notoriety for the subsequent back-and-forth with Juice Crew's Roxanne Shante. The then-teen fired back at UTFO's playful record with the blistering "Roxanne's Revenge."
On "Roxanne, Roxanne," the fellas sang flirtatiously about a woman who wouldn't respond to their advances. Shante fired away, and UTFO answered with another record not directly aimed at the upstart Juice Crew member, but it featured another fiery lady in the Real Roxanne. Later, they dropped yet another "Roxanne" record, on which they took back the compliments they originally draped over their would-be paramour.
The Roxanne Wars went on longer than a G.O.O.D. Friday posse cut, with a seemingly endless array of "Roxannes" coming out with response records. These days, however, Kangol Kid has nothing but good things to say about lady lyricists, with no threat of taking back his kind words. He said he's checking for Nicki Minaj and her Young Money cohort Drake to take the culture and the music business forward.
"Versatility, absolutely, that gives you longevity," he told Mixtape Daily. "One of those cats right now in the biz is Drake. Drake is doing it, as far as singing and rapping and bringing his own style to the table. That's what the industry needs.
"Another one that's bringing it right now is Nicki Minaj," the Kid continued. "Nicki is so bringing it. She's on everything. That's the other thing: You got to stay consistent."
