The 68-year-old music legend said that it felt good to leave behind his aides and hangers-on because it meant that he could take control of the day-to-day running of his life once more.
Following his marriage to Linda Eastman in 1969, he revealed that he jumped at the chance to pick his own Christmas decorations for once.
He told TheQuietus.com, 'It was the pressures of the Beatles, and also life in the goldfish bowl where you didn't buy your own Christmas tree. Someone in the office bought your Christmas tree for you, and I just got fed up with that.
'So when Linda and I got together I was like, 'you know what? I can hop down the High Street and get my own Christmas tree, or even take an axe to the forest and hope nobody sees me'.'
