The 69-year-old, who is hitting the road again with a solo tour, told The Mirror that his nerves almost signalled the beginning of the end for his music career when he was in The Quarrymen with his future Beatles band mate John Lennon.
“The first time we ever played – pre-Beatles – I screwed up,” he said. “So I never played lead guitar again.
“When the Beatles did Wembley for the first time, I felt sick. I thought, ‘I’ve got to give this up’.”
And he was so haunted by his mistakes that to this day he still has nightmares that the audience has walked out.
“I’m with the Beatles and it’s going great, then people start leaving,” he explained.
“I turn to the others and go, ‘Oh God! Long Tall Sally – that’ll get them back’.”
