Pink Floyd will release their first album of new music in twenty years, The Endless River, on November 10 via Columbia.
To call this a "new" album is a bit of a misnomer. The 18-tracks, all instrumental except for one, on the album were taken from the 1993 recording sessions for The Division Bell. At the time, David Gilmour, Nick Mason and the late Richard Wright jammed on over one hundred pieces of music. The eighteen tracks were taken from those sessions and finished by producer Bob Ezrin and a number of studio musicians. Gilmour and Mason also entered the studio to add additional performances.
David Gilmour said in a statement "The Endless River has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 Division Bell sessions. We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album. Over the last year we've added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album. With Rick gone, and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right that these revisited and reworked tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire."
Mason added "The Endless River is a tribute to Rick. I think this record is a good way of recognizing a lot of what he does and how his playing was at the heart of the Pink Floyd sound. Listening back to the sessions, it really brought home to me what a special player he was."
Along with the seventeen instrumentals, the track Louder Than Words has lyrics from David Gilmour's wife Polly Samson. Production was by Gilmour with Phil Manzanera, Youth and Andy Jackson.
Each version of the album includes a 24-page hard cover book with previously unseen photographs from the 1993 sessions. On the DVD version, the disc contains the album in 5.1 surround plus a stereo version in 48khz/24 bit. The Blu-Ray has high resolution 5.1 surround, PCM stereo 96/24 and 39 minutes of non-album video including six video and three audio tracks
