Richard Ashcroft plays the hits at intimate acoustic London gig

Richard Ashcroft played a hit-laden solo set in front of around 300 people at London's Union Chapel last night (December 7), taking requests from the audience throughout.

The former Verve frontman played using just an acoustic guitar and microphone. Early on he thanked fans for "coming out in the cold", adding somewhat bizarrely that "there's no sheep in the room tonight".

The gig, which was primarily for members of Ashcroft's fanclub, raised money for the War Child charity. He kicked off his set with Verve favourite 'Sonnet', before launching into solo single 'A Song For The Lovers'.

As the gig went on Ashcroft played tracks requested by audience members, including rarely-played songs such as 'Paradise' and 'I Get My Beat'.

Set-closer '(C'mon People) We're Makin' It Now' inspired a particularly fervent act of fandom - one over-enthusiastic audience member managed to run onto the stage before being removed by security as Ashcroft finished the song.
