Robin Thicke and Pharrell have lost the first round in the Marvin Gaye copyright lawsuit.
Following much deliberation over who was responsible for the writing of 'Blurred Lines', the judge presiding over the case has decided that the two songs are similar enough to proceed. This backs up the claims from Gaye's family that the No.1 hit is musical theft when viewed next to 'Got To Give Up'.
Judge John Kronstadt ruled experts bought in by Gaye's family "made a sufficient showing that elements of 'Blurred Lines' may be substantially similar to protected, original elements of 'Got to Give It Up.' Defendants have identified these with particularity for purposes of analytic dissection."
The ruling means that the legal battle will continue with proceedings resuming 10 February 2015.
