He reckons Rooney’s time is up at Old Trafford following an alleged row with his Scots manager, Sir Alex Ferguson – and suggested the player should join rivals, Manchester City.
Rod said: “I think he’s been there a long time and he's not getting on with Sir Alex.
"Manchester City can have him.”
He added: “He’s a great player and I wish he was Scottish.
“He’s a mate of mine!”
Crossing his fingers, Celtic supporter Rod, 65, joked: “Me and Wayne are like that.”
He had been having lunch with pregnant wife, 39-year-old Penny Lancaster, at Nello’s restaurant on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
Earlier on Tuesday he appeared on US television show Good Morning America to promote his new covers album, Fly Me to the Moon...The Great American Songbook Volume V.
