The outrageous British comic famously battled addictions to sex and drugs before he settled down with Katy. The pair are engaged and set to tie the knot very soon, in a ceremony believed to be taking place in India. When they first began dating, many were surprised at the blossoming romance – due to Russell’s wild past and Katy having such religious parents. However, Russell insists he has formed a close bond with the pop star’s mother and father, revealing they actually have a lot in common.
“Her dad is really lovely. He is more on the rocker biker side of preaching,” he explained in an interview with British television programme This Morning. “Remember in America Christianity has a whole different vibe – especially born again. He likes Elvis, he used to take acid – there is all sorts of things I can connect with him on: acid and Elvis.
“The first encounter with him was Katy’s 25th birthday party. If I am prepared for it mentally I have good manners for meeting parents. I pretend I am a diplomat visiting an embassy, all polite and stuff.”
Russell also spoke about his new tome, Booky Wooky 2: This Time it’s Personal. In it, he makes a dedication to Katy which says, ‘This is my past, you are my future.’
The 35-year-old star didn’t tell his fiancée he had written the touching tribute to her and wanted it to be a surprise when she read it. He is now glad he kept it a secret, because it helped him get out of a tricky situation when he made a comment in jest about their relationship.
“She encountered the dedication at the same time as she read a quote about whether I minded if Katy was a pop star,” he said. “I had been interviewed on a show and I said, ‘No I think it’s fantastic, and if she wasn’t I would have to find another pop star which would be OK, I would probably phone Lady Gaga and I know she would answer because she always has that phone on her head.’
“That was a joke, but when it was written down it looked like a statement. Katy was like, ‘What did you say? What is this thing I have just seen?’
“Luckily that article also mentioned the dedication which Katy didn’t know about because she hasn’t seen a physical copy of the book. I haven’t had a chance to give it to her. I thought it would be a nice surprise for her to see it when it came out.”
