The British comic - who is making a show about himself called Happiness - said that rather than being troubled by the number of people who have died on the table at Louisiana’s Angola Jail, he was more concerned with how good the shot would look.
He told The Sun: 'I went to the execution room where they give the lethal injection and got strapped on the table. I should have been thinking, 'This is bad, they've killed people on this.' But I actually thought this is a great shot, I look Christ-like.'
And the 35-year-old was left fearing for his safety after meeting lifer Henry Smith.
'It was terrifying. The average sentence in there was 80 years for murder. This guy is dangerous, suicidal and once escaped,” Russell said. 'I was in his cell and I start winding him up that I'm in movies and rich. I said, 'This is a bit depressing. You have no possessions. This bed is really hard. I stay in hotels, I'm famous and rich, you see.' It was a stupid thing to do. I got out of there as quick as I could. Here's a social tip – don't boast!'
