PRS for Music, the performing rights group in England (like ASCAP, BMI and SESAC in North America) has polled the British public to determine the ten most controversial songs.
Topping the list is Prodigy's Smack Me Up Bitch, a song that was banned by the BBC and was condemned by feminist groups when it was released in 1997. Second went to the Sex Pistols' God Save the Queen and third to Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Relax.
Ellis Rich, chairman of PRS, said "These results demonstrate the link between music and society. Many of these songs have achieved iconic status because of the controversy or because the record was banned."
The ten:
1.Smack My Bitch Up - Prodigy
2.God Save The Queen - Sex Pistols
3.Relax - Frankie Goes To Hollywood
4.Kim - Eminem
5.Killing In The Name - Rage Against The Machine
6.Ebeneezer Goode - Shamen
7.Suicide Solution - Ozzy Osbourne
8.Get Your Gunn - Marilyn Manson
9.Angel of Death - Slayer
10.Dear God - XTC
