Peter Parker is swinging back into action this month — and it looks like his next big-screen adventure will be pretty "Amazing," too.
Sony announced on Tuesday (February 5) that production on "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," director Marc Webb's sequel to the 2012 superhero reboot, has officially begun. In an announcement posted on the "Spider-Man" Facebook page, Sony confirmed recent casting additions, such as Paul Giamatti (rumored to be playing the hard-hitting villain The Rhino) and "Thor" actor Colm Feore, whose role in the "Spider-Man" sequel is currently unknown.
The "Spider-Man" announcement came equipped with a synopsis that explains just how tricky life has gotten for poor Peter since last we saw him. "For Peter Parker, life is busy," the summary reads. "Between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Emma Stone), high school graduation can't come quickly enough. Peter hasn't forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen's father to protect her by staying away -- but that's a promise he just can't keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx), emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past."
Though she's not named in the plot summary, the "Spider-Man" release confirms Shailene Woodley's casting for the sequel. She'll play Mary Jane Watson, the fiery-haired love interest of Peter in the "Spider-Man" comics and the original trilogy of films. Woodley spoke with MTV News at Sundance last month about her hopes and fears as she swings into Webb's world. "Spider-Man's always been my favorite superhero since I was a little girl," she said. "I always thought there was something special about flying. When I watched the previous 'Spider-Man' with Andrew Garfield, he made me feel invincible. I also cried when Uncle Ben died. I knew it was coming, and I still cried! I think Marc Webb is amazing. I'm so stoked to work with Andrew and Emma. They're the best of the best."
