Following up their appearance at the 2006 Give It A Name Festival, The Ataris return to release their 5th studio album, 'Welcome the Night', on February 19th 2007. This is the band's debut release through Sequel Records, in conjunction with Isola Recordings..
Joining original Ataris members Kristopher Roe (vocals, guitar, percussion) and John Collura (guitar and piano) are new members Paul Carabello (guitar, percussion and vocals), Sean Hansen, (bass and vocals) and Shane Chikeles (drums and percussion).
'Welcome the Night,' The Ataris' follow up to 2003's million selling album 'So Long Astoria,' is easily the most daring, dazzling and inspiring Ataris album yet. The band explores new musical ground and takes their sound in a different direction with songs like 'Not Capable of Love,' which combines bracing Pixies-style fuzz guitar with a buoyant bass line reminiscent of the Cure, and 'Cardiff-By-The-Sea,' which resounds with melancholy pop hooks, but echoes with ominous warbling guitars redolent of My Bloody Valentine. Other songs like 'And We All Become like Smoke' incorporate angular guitars, tendrils of feedback and yearning vocals that resemble
The Bends-ear of Radiohead. 'Welcome The Night' is an eclectic and accomplished album that is classic Ataris.
Recorded in an old house in the valleys of Los Angeles through several cold and wet winter months, 'Welcome the Night' saw The Ataris work with legendary producer Nick Launay (Nick Cave, Talking Heads, and Silverchair). Launay allowed the band go back to basics and record the entire album on tape without the use of computers and pro tools to the give the album a much rawer and classic feel. The result is a unique mixture of songs that express a wide range of emotions and influences, while retaining their own unblemished purity.
