Xfm has held its inaugural 'Debut Album of the Year Award' ceremony at Koko in Camden. The Enemy was the worthy winners of the award which recognises the best UK Debut Album of 2007.
The event, hosted by Xfm London's breakfast show host, Alex Zane saw Alison Mosshart from The Kills, The Ting Tings, Danny McNamara, producer Mark Ronson and Peaches Geldof among others take to the red carpet.
The night saw performances from many of the nominees including The Twang, The View, The Maccabees, The Wombats, Frank Turner and Air Traffic. Other nominees included Kate Nash, Klaxons and The Pigeon Detectives.
Xfm listeners voted for two weeks for the bands they thought should be awarded the title of Best UK Debut Album 2007 and a shortlist was announced in November detailing the top ten bands in the running.
The judges all arrived earlier in the day to begin the long and unenviable decision of choosing the winner - all of whom agreed that it was an extremely close decision with two bands tying neck and neck all night. The panel was made up of music industry VIP's including Maximo Park's Paul Smith, Nicky Wire from the Manic Street Preachers, legendary producer John Leckie, editor of the NME Conor McNicholas, Xfm DJ John Kennedy, Xfm Manchester's Clint Boon, Jim Gellatly from Xfm Scotland and Colin Francies from newly launched Xfm South Wales.
When asked to comment on their win, The Enemy simply said,
'Thanks to anyone who wanted us to be hear and bring on 2008!'
Ande Macpherson, programme director of the Xfm network and chairman of the judging panel, said 'After two incredibly close rounds of voting by the judges the Enemy rose to the top of a really strong group of nominees. When it came to the crunch a major factor was just how many of our listeners had voted for them to be in the top ten.'
