The Futureheads release Hounds of Love

There are cover versions and then there are cover versions. ‘Hounds of Love' is none of the above. Let's face it, doing other people's stuff the last refuge of the creatively bankrupt; either b-side fodder (and “cool” positioning exercise) when all the “exclusive” live versions have run out, or easy pickings for X-Factor A&R departments after a familiar hit that won't frighten the horses.

It wasn't always this way (well, actually it probably was, but for the sake of argument stick with us). Time was when a Joe Cocker could take the unremarkable plod of The Beatles ‘With A Little Help From My Friends' and turn it into something genuinely inspirational. Later, of course, The Clash positioned themselves perfectly as the conscious punk band with their ragged heartfelt reading of Junior Murvin's ‘Police & Thieves'.

It is into this exclusive environment that we introduce The Futureheads' rendition of Kate Bush's classic ‘Hounds of Love'. A staple of their live set for some time now, ‘Hounds of Love' is so “interpreted” that it was only familiarity with the lyrics that alerted us as to its provenance. The Futureheads cover ‘Hounds of Love' is a showstopper that eclipses even their own inspired reading of the Television Personalities ‘Picture of Dorian Gray'.

Beginning with Ross and Jaff's a capella call and response yelps, the songs explodes into euphoric life with Barry's feverish delivery of Kate's once sensual words and a riot of overdriven guitars and search and destroy drumming courtesy of the coolest incumbent of a drumstool, Mr Dave Hyde.

Fuck it! ‘Hounds of Love' is inspired and The Futureheads are a band hitting their creative stride as never before, as anyone who's just seen them on their recent live dates will testify. Wow, what a band!
