Ireland's finest, The Undertones, mark the 35th anniversary of their classic debut single Teenage Kicks with the release of 'An Introduction to The Undertones', a 22 track CD plus 2 hour DVD featuring the superb documentary Teenage Kicks: The Story Of The Undertones, in which legendary DJ John Peel travels to Derry to meet the band almost three decades after he helped to kick start their career.
Released 3rd June by Salvo, as part of their acclaimed Sound and Vision range, this superbly packaged release features 22 pop fizz bombs, and includes 7 promo videos plus rare live performance footage from 1978 – 1983 including TV performances from The Old Grey Whistle Test and The Tube.
Turning up like badly behaved, younger siblings during the punk and 'new wave' boom of 1977-1978, Derry's The Undertones always had youth on their side. Anyone who remembers seeing their first foray onto the nation's screens on TOTP remembers a spotty bunch of teenagers in school jumpers and Docs. The line up featured the O'Neill brothers – John and Damian on guitars, Michael Bradley on bass, Billy Doherty on drums, and Feargal Sharkey on vocals.
Like countless others, punk rock fired their imagination, and gave shape and direction to their material. A love of Garage bands helped formulate their predilection for songs with strong chorus hooks, keeping songs short, economical and dynamic. Their classic debut single Teenage Kicks released in 1978 on the Good Vibrations label in Belfast excited influential Radio One DJ John Peel so much that he announced it to be his 'favourite record of all time', and played the single twice in a row.
Teenage Kicks: The Story Of The Undertones, a fascinating 1 hour documentary charting the band's rise from playing in their bedrooms and local Scout Huts to the clubs and pubs of Derry and ultimately the USA. With exclusive live footage from 1979's Northern Irish Shell Shock Rock documentary and France's Chorus: The Undertones – Live at Le Palace (1980), plus an additional 7 promo videos and studio performances from The Old Grey Whistle Test and The Tube, 'An Introduction to The Undertones', is an essential item for any diehard Undertones fan or new fan alike.
