His partner Helena Bonham Carter revealed the director was forced to miss the British Independent Film Awards in early December because of his illness.
According to the Daily Star, she said: "My dear boyfriend, who sadly is not here ... he is pushing out a kidney stone as we speak."
But a source told the Mail on Sunday that Burton's condition worsened and he was admitted to hospital towards the end of the month.
"Tim has been ill for weeks. He thought he would have the all-clear by Christmas but the problem was ongoing,” the insider said.
