Tom Cruise has decided against starring in a possible sequel to Top Gun.
Cruise played pilot Maverick in the classic 1986 film, which grossed more than $250 million in box office sales - an impressive figure for the time.
Sources close to the 49-year-old have said that although he was interested in reprising his role, in the end things didn't work out.
One told The Daily Express: "Tom loves the idea. But it doesn’t look like he is going to be a part of it. The new Top Gun will now be a reinvention focusing on a new set of young recruits.
"The plan was to re-release the original movie, then use the interest in that to help fuel a sequel with Tom in a supporting role."
Cruise is currently filming the movie adaptation of the hit Broadway show Rock of Ages, which is due for release in 2013.
