Against Me! frontman Tom Gabel has revealed that he is transgender and plans to start living as a woman.
Gabel has fronted the righteous punk rock band for the last fifteen years, their fifth album White Crosses released in 2010.
Now he has revealed to Rolling Stone that he has dealt with gender dysphoria for a number of years and is about to transition to live as a woman.
He is to take the name Laura Jane Grace and begin taking hormones and undergoing electrolysis treatment soon. He will remain married to his wife Heather and revealed, "For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news. But she's been super-amazing and understanding."
Gabel also expressed concerns about the future. "I'm going to have embarrassing moments," he told Rolling Stone, "and that won't be fun. But that's part of what talking to you is about – is hoping people will understand, and hoping they'll be fairly kind."
The full story appears in the next issue of the magazine.
