Tori Kelly in awe of Prince

American singer Tori Kelly was "in awe" of Prince when he came to watch her perform.

The 22-year-old fledgling star has impressed with her debut album Unbreakable Smile, which debuted at number two on the US Billboard charts. Tori has attracted an array of celebrity fans having recorded with Ed Sheeran and been tweeted by Taylor Swift. Even Prince is a big fan, something which Tori feels totally overwhelmed by.

"He came to my show, I was in awe," Tori told Britain's Grazia magazine.

Tori signed to Capitol Records after catching the attention of Scooter Braun, who is also Justin Bieber's manager. Earlier this year (15), Tori sent the internet into overdrive after she confidently belted out her single It Should've Been You at the VMAs.

The singer-songwriter has always known exactly what kind of artist she wanted to be. Although she was given the chance to be a star after landing a record label meeting when she was just 13, Tori wasn't willing to change for fame.

"The room was full of video screens showing well-known female artists wearing barely any clothes," the singer recalls. "I was still a little girl and it was confusing. I felt like, 'Do they want me to do that type of thing? Does he want me to wear that and dance like that?' I had a gut feeling it wasn't right for me. I'm glad I stayed true to myself and didn't compromise."

Tori never has a problem finding new ideas for her songs and often can't contain herself when she is struck by inspiration.

The emerging musician once even made excuses to escape and pen lyrics while she was attending a glitzy event.

"I was recently at a fancy dinner, and had an idea for a song, so I snuck to the bathroom and recorded the whole thing on my iPhone," she laughed.
