MTV's Musical March Madness tournament returns on March 18, when 64 bands begin the quest to wrest the championship trophy from Tokio Hotel's well-manicured hands. Will anyone succeed? We won't know until the final buzzer sounds in the title game ... but there's one band that's determined to give it their all.
We're talking about upset-minded underdogs , who enter this year's MMM untested, but, like fellow tourney virgins Imagine Dragons, ready to shock the world. Shoot, they've already got their march to the title game all mapped out.
"We're a newer band, so we're probably around a 15 seed, so we'll be playing a #2, and it's hardly ever happened that [a lower seed] wins that game, but we're going to take a stab at it," frontman Tyler Joseph said. "I think we'll be taking on a much bigger band that we will probably beat because of our looks alone, I think that's most important aspect of our team."
Of course, no matter how confident they may be, the Pilots know it will take more than just good looks to knock off tough competition like Fall Out Boy and Fun. Which is why they've been hitting the gym and training like absolute beasts for the tournament.
"We've been doing some push-ups lately," Joseph said. "We've trained hard."
"We're going to continue to work on the pushups, we're also going to work on our sit-ups," drummer Josh Dun added, "just in case our abs are exposed in some way, which a lot of times they can be. That will be the true shocker for most of the world."
But will Twenty One Pilots have enough core strength to pull off the impossible dream and win this whole thing? That's up to you. After all, fans vote for the winners in all Musical March Madness matchups, and when voting gets underway on Monday, March 18 — when we unveil our bracket of 64 bands — we'll see if their training can carry them to the championship. But let's just say they like their chances.
"Honestly, keep an eye out for the true Cinderella story, Twenty One Pilots," Joseph said. "Because I don't mean to be cocky, but we are the best."
