With all of the platinum and gold plaques on Wyclef Jean's walls, the star producer didn't have to drop a free mixtape online on Monday (April 29), but we're sure glad he did. We're even happier that the Fugees founding member will be joining MTV News on "RapFix Live" Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV Jams and RapFix.MTV.com.
For his newly released April Showers 'Clef rounded up T.I., Mobb Deep, Waka Flocka Flame, Los, Kirko Bangz and Troy Ave to craft the 33-track tape, and on it, he shows the full range. Jean gets political on his pro-Haiti "Open Letter" freestyle, shows his rock side on "Stay on My Jimi Hendrix" and reacquaints us with an old friend on "Whitney Houston Dub Plate."
Throughout Wyclef's career, the producer/rapper has proven to be diverse. His work on the Fugee's 1996 Grammy Award-winning LP The Score opened him up to work with the likes of Whitney Houston, Carlos Santana and Shakira, as well as hip-hop favorites like T.I., Big Pun and LL Cool J. So you can bet he has plenty of stories to tell.
'Clef will be joined by rap newcomer Kid Ink, who just inked his first major label deal with RCA in January. Last year the Los Angeles MC dropped his independent LP Up & Away and hit #2 on the Billboard rap album chart "We achieved so much last year independently but we just felt it was time to team up with a major in 2013 to take it to the next level and RCA is as excited as we are about the vision and possibilities," Ink said in a press release which followed.
