The pair met on the set of the Disney film and shot to fame playing Troy and Gabriella.
But after more than three years together, Efron, 23, and Hudgens, 21, reportedly decided to call it quits, but remain ‘good friends’.
'It was mutual,' a source close to the former couple said.
'They have been together for so long. It just ran its course.
'They are still talking and still friends. There's no drama. No one cheated. They just grew up.'
The couple’s work commitments have kept them apart since the end of their roles in High School Musical.
At the time of their split, Efron was filming his new movie The Lucky One in New Orleans while Hudgens was working on Journey 2: The Mysterious Island in Hawaii.
