Roots Syndicate Biography
Reggae band Roots Syndicate recorded their only hit "Mockin' Bird Hill" as a tune to a Dutch television commercial. The first version was already recorded in 1951, but producer Jaap Eggermont acknowledged the song's hit potential - even forty-plus years after of its initial recording. Roots Syndicate rushed to the top of the Dutch hit parade with the cheerful song and ended up being a typical one-hit wonder. The commercial for which "Mockin' Bird Hill" was recorded, known by the title "Hedgehog", is one of the most popular commercials issued by Centraal Beheer Achmea. It features a rastafari painting a white line on a mountain road with his three-wheeled vehicle. When the rastaman tries to avoid a hedgehog passing on the road, the line suddenly becomes oddly curved. Softdrink Sisi issued a similar themed commercial around the same time, featuring a rastafari man who accidently pushes over a van. The music in this commercial is a version of the evergreen "Sisi Rider".
