Terry Dexter Biography
This singer/songwriter has the style and sound reminiscent of the past, a voice with a core of grit and soul dipped in honey sweetness. Her artistry and style was built from the environment of her hometown: Detroit Michigan, otherwise known as Motown. The niece of a Baptist preacher, Terry began her musical journey singing in her uncle’s church. By her early teens this songbird was performing in the regionally known band Tri-Star as well as recording background for artists such as Simply Red. She made her solo debut in 1999 with her critically acclaimed self-titled Warner Bros album that spanned two Billboard singles "Better Than Me" and "Strayed Away". She was then featured on the remix to Eric Benet's number one smash "Spend My Life With You" as well as singing a duet with recording artist Jaheim that appeared on his double platinum album "Ghetto Love". Terry has also appeared on numerous soundtracks such as "Rush Hour", "Bait ", "Deck The Halls" "Bring It On 2" and "Legally Blond" where she was featured along side the "Black Eye Peas;" front man WILL.I.AM who then went on to feature Terry on their underground jam "Lay Me Down" from his "Lost Change" album. Her big screen debut happened in 2003 in the movie "Deliver Us From Eva," where she performed a stirring rendition of "Amazing Grace" in addition to working along side Raphael Saadiq on a feature song which appeared on the adjoining soundtrack. 2005 is what Terry describes as the "Year of the legends". Her mentor Patti Labelle introduced her on the "Tonight Show" as they performed a rendition of"Ain't No Way". The same year Terry was invited to perform on the Hurricane Katrina record "Heart Of America" sharing singing duties with Wynona Judd and Michael McDonald and Eric Benet culminating into live appearances on the "Today Show" and the World Series game three. Always the kind of artist to stretch the envelope, this budding Diva made her introduction to the electronic music world starting with the record "Better Than Me" in 2000 which landed at No. 2 on the Billboard Dance charts and featured two of electronic musics legends Roy Davis Jr. and Hex Hector. Again in 2003 Terry and Roy Davis Jr. would team up again on his critically acclaimed Ubiquity album "Chicago Forever" of which Terry was featured on three songs including the "Billboard" single and Winter Music Conference top ten "If You Wanna." Terry and Roy then went on to release another international release "Wonderin." Coming up for Terry Dexter are 7 new electronic relreases including three new records with Roy Davis Jr. as well as a feature on Steve Hurleys much anticipated house/soul complimation. Terry is also featured on electronic projects spanning from Russia, Holland, New York and Los Angeles. On the gospel tip Terry co-wrote a song featuring Patti Labelle, Mary Mary, and Kanye West featured on Patti Labelles new gospel album. She is also featured on two songs from Image Music Groups' upcoming gospel complimation. Terry is also featured on a song from Paul Taylors critically acclaimed newly released CD. She is also featured on the theme song of the upcoming Sunset Pictures movie "Sweetwater" and currently playing the lead role of Tyme opposite Morris Chestnut in the David E. Talbert musical "Love In The Nick Of Tyme" Back on the R&B side of things, Terry is currently in the studio working on a new album project in which she calls an "Homage to her hometown roots, full of substance and soul" "THE REBIRTH OF MOTOWN".
