The Ganjas

Aunque el playero título oficial de una de las primeras canciones de The Ganjas es "Let's go to the beach", es su nombre original el que sintetiza mejor la dirección de este grupo de rock: "Manchester reggae". "Es por los dos lados del grupo: Manchester y el reggae. Tenemos temas reggae, temas sónicos y temas Manchester", ha dicho el bajista y cantante Rafael Astaburuaga, en alusión a la raíz jamaicana, al sonido espacial y a la nueva psicodelia irradiada desde esa norteña ciudad inglesa a fines de los ’90: de esas fuentes está hecha la música de este grupo. La primera impresión de The Ganjas cuando debutó en vivo en noviembre de 2001, en La Excalera, pudo ser la de una reencarnación flotante de Yajaira: estaba formado por los guitarristas Samuel Maquieira y Miguel Ángel Montenegro, ambos veteranos de esa banda de hard rock, además de Astaburuaga y el baterista Aldo Benincasa, también prolífico fotógrafo de rock. Pero The Ganjas demostró pronto sus más amplios horizontes. El grupo conjuga el pulso narcótico del dub, hace un reggae de bar oscuro, recoge el eco más noble y volado de The Verve, toca un rock and roll sin prisa en "Rock de la ganja" y en "This is the time" hace rock latino con maracas y congas como lo inventó Santana. Tras la partida de Montenegro, el arribo del tecladista Luis Felipe Saavedra acentuó en 2002 el rasgo espacial de la música del grupo, prensada en los discos The Ganjas (2003) y Laydown (2005), cantados en inglés por Maquieira y en castellano por Astaburuaga. Otras canciones como "Dance hall" o "La lluvia no quiere caer" constan en el EP acústico Fuma y mira (2004). Y The Ganjas también ha expandido su sonido con invitados como los percusionistas Javier Alonso y Álvaro Gómez, de Guiso, o el guitarrista Alejandro Gómez, de Solar. El grupo ha trasladado la misma entrega hipnótica al escenario en una nutrida cartelera de conciertos. En vivo, The Ganjas no sólo es compatible con músicos de la órbita del sello rockero Algo Records o con el trío de rock pesado Hielo Negro, grupos con los que suelen tocar. Entre el 15 y el 17 de octubre de 2005 hicieron su debut internacional al tocar con Guiso en el gran festival "Rock al Parque" celebrado en Bogotá, Colombia, y también han actuado en tres ocasiones, una de ellas en Hamburgo, junto al dúo de electrónica latina Mambotur, con quienes además están ligados por lazos de parentesco. "Si el sonido queda bien, Ganjas está abierto a todo. No es algo rígido", ha dicho Maquieira.
