The Matys Brothers

There were 4 Matys Brothers , Walt, John, Emil and Gene.Emil died earlier this May, Gene died in 1993. They grew up in Chester, Pa. They were very popular in the Philly area and made recordings there. In the 1950's , they backed up the group Bill Haley's and His Comets. Bill & the Comets backed the Matys Bros. with their song Muskrat Ramble. Their biggest hit was Who Stole The Keeshka? They made several albums, 45's and 8 track tapes. In that area they were known as the POLKA PRINCES. They came out west and played at the Holiday Hotel in Reno and the Commercial Hotel in Elko, Nevada. They also played at the Showboat in Las Vegas. Emil and Gene acted like clowns on stage in the old slapstick way where anything goes.You never knew what they'd do next. I remember having to take Gene to the hospital as he burned the back of this leg when trying to pass a cigarette under it. However they played good music and all the contemporary ones of the times. Emil married their singer Maria Carmen and had a son Marc. Gene had 2 sons one of which is Gene Jr. They played in various places during the 60's and 70's. They settled in Elko, NV where both Gene and Emil died. I do not know what happened to the other brothers. Maria still lives in Florida but might come back to California.Their son lives in Ca. Gene's sons , one lives in The Monterey Bay area of Central California. Gene Jr. lives here in Reno Nevada. I'm their mother, Pearl. They were very well liked wherever they went.
