Zeeza Biography
The Magic of Zeeza-by Zeeza love "Love is my Energy Machine" At MP3.com, the central and largest website for independent artists, *Zeeza*was named one of the Top Alternative Artists page, with art pictures and free mp3s in 1999, and have had 11 number one songs that year. Only 2 Canadians were singled out for special honors by MP3.com that year, and the coverage of Zeeza in the Canadian press. Zeeza has recorded a CD with the legendary guitarist and producer Harvey “the Snake” Mandel, from the popular 70s Band "Canned Heat", who also recorded with the Rolling Stones in the 70s. You've herd him with The Rolling Stones, Canned Heat and many others. A pioneer of modern electric blues from Chicago, Harvey Mandel developed and mastered sustain and controlled feedback, displaying both extroversion and musical virtuosity. He has performed with many blues legends including Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Otis Rush, Albert King, and Buddy Guy. One of Mandel's most significant session credits was his participation on Black and Blue, the 1976 LP from The Rolling Stones. We thank Sonic Foundry for sponsoring one of the first if not the first online digital recording project. _________________________________________________________________________________ What music fans say about Zeeza: " I've been contemplating the artist known simply as "Zeeza." As I recall, I selected one of her tracks for Song of the Day a few months ago. Good call, that.... a very gifted Canadian performer... She reminds us a bit of a female Donovon Lietch, and yet is unique unto herself.... If you haven't discovered Zeeza's music, I suspect that you will find yourself completely enchanted......." -Rod Underhill, mp3.com Administrator ____________________________________________________ Zeeza is a multi-faceted Canadian singer/songwrite r with an intimate, intense voice and a collection o f intelligent, eclectic work....Zeeza's voice is a rare and wonderful thing. Somebody will be the first breakaway internet star, so far I don't see anybody close to Zeeza." - Jingo/fan ____________________________________________________ :Year 2000: "Everybody says it's so predictable when I talk about Zeeza. People say I don't support other artists, when it's pretty obvious that I almost live to spread the word about the one independent artist that moves me. Well, I happen to think I have more credibility than most, and it certainly wasn't predictable AT ALL to those who know me that I would devote myself to the cause of another artist. C'mon, I'm not all over the bbs kissing everyone's ass whose song I happen to have listened to. Hmm. Well, it occurred to me today that someday, maybe very soon, people are gonna be saying I'm a genius for spotting this amazing essence of talent and not being afraid to say so, under ridiculous conditions where everybody is so phony and jaded about their friends' talent that not only do so few ever dare to admit that a song does nothing for them, but even sadder, so few even believe in the concept of greatness anymore. Just look at the constant ridicule I've taken for wanting to let people know about her. Why ? Because it's all just a game for you ? Well, it's not for me. What got you into music in the first place ? For me it was waiting for my mom to come home Friday from town to see which 45s, from the list I gave her, she was able to find for me. Man, Friday was a great fuckin' day in my house, I would play those babies over and over and over. I feel that way sometimes when I can tell by Zeeza's reaction that she is excited about a song. I just know the goods are coming my way. I had to end this issue talking about this, because I am lucky enough to get a closeup view of something extraordinary. This week alone, she's recorded 2 excellent versions of Away in a Manger, a great version of House of the Rising Sun, and if that wasn't enough, wrote and recorded 2 MORE SONGS IN THE LAST 2 DAYS. She wired the first one to me 2 nights ago, was sort of a raw rockabilly type song, very cool, oh the purity of that voice. Did a great job recording it too. I have to laugh. I hang out at a couple wannabe producer bbs and half the people who post there are afraid to let you hear a single song. They're always telling me how I should not put out so many songs, should wait til blah blah blah. That wait is your weight, not mine. I present to you, without any fucking apologies, my inspiration, and her name begins with a Z. Never could anyone possibly influence my musical life more than she already has. What the Beatles did for my love of music, she did for my understanding of what it is to truly be an artist, and watching Zeeza in action has shattered all pretenses I ever had about how I was going to present my music, before I encountered her. You can't overthink the creative process, you must set yourself free, and she is a river flowing, from her soul, to her mp3.com page, to mine and your ears. I said to her this week, after seeing yet another one of her pictures that could be somebody else altogether, that she must be 50 people in one - such a live nerve of angst and power, who also delicately produces these songs that seemingly pop out of nowhere. And a voice so undescribable, if you are open enough to let yourself absorb it and get lost in it, well, it doesn't even seem to belong to her. But there she is, in her complexity, for you to witness - the multi-angles and reflections of someone who has just made a direct link from her psyche to all of us who are alert enough to observe. And, in her simplicity, a voice, a guitar, a song, a click of the mouse. Can't any of you see that this is what it's all about ? The joy of making the music and getting it done and giving of yourself and showing the world." *Father Time* posted 06-2000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Robert Phoenix posted 10-06-2000 08:01 PM "Listening now..... " no she never does and much to my own self hatred at times." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- " In my honest opinion, being a true fan of industrial metal and Techno(electronica), I do find myself listening to other forms of music. I must admit that I did enjoy a few of the songs that I listened to. The songs that held my intrest most are "T'aime Trop", "Karma Trance", and "French Jazz Thing". **"Orgasmantra" simply rocked!! Do an entire CD with that type of techno sound and it would be DEFINATE purchase from me!** When I have the time, I will check it out. Promise. By the way, just listened to "Points of Five", I loved it. You DO have talent my friend. I will be recomending your music to a lot of friends. Again, good luck in all that you do." As I recall, I selected one of her tracks for Song of the Day a few months ago. Good call, that. Zeeza has produced a rich collection of songs crossing various genres. All in all, I'd say that she has a natural flair for jazz and modern folk influenced Pop. As I have a penchant for the blues myself, I am also very fond of her work in that area. Zeeza obviously is very hard working and has her eye on success. A lot of thought has gone into her MP3.com artist page which amounts to an admirable example of her ability to exploit resources that come her way. The quality of her voice is quite pleasing. Her music is the sort of thing that you could play during a relaxing evening and simply let if flow over you while you sat back and enjoyed a glass of wine and a warm fire. Zeeza is also very generous--giving oodles of free MP3s away to her fans. Four DAM CDs are available, though, and I recommend them all. Jazzy, breezy, and enjoyable. I've seen lines of lyrics she's just thrown away that will make me think for days. I only ..wish I had the innate grasp of the English language that she does, and so effortlessly. And this, her second tongue even. My god, I know some of you "get" her, but the rest of you, if you haven't stepped back and really listened to what's going on, the way her words just lay it all on the line, yet leave you a different person when it's over, you just don't know what kind of powerful musical presence we all have here right under our noses." In the last year, the online music scene has really exploded, and one of the biggest up-and-coming acts on the internet is the soulful self-produced singer-songwriter known as Zeeza. At the hub of indie music, MP3.com, she has achieved near-legendary status with 11 Number One songs, and she is clearly the most talked about female artist in that whole giant community. Because of the uncompromising emotional honesty of her lyrics, and the complete Zeeza experience which includes controversial art and writings, her mystique has been the subject of numerous songs by other artists, including one about her being Queen of MP3.com that reached # 2 on the charts. Her real power though comes from that sweet sensual bluesy voice, which has the 3D effect of leaving the listeners feeling like she's singing her songs directly to them. Zeeza's songs are tuneful and timeless, yet quite diverse, sung with that voice of an angel that will melt you slowly, the words teaching you, teasing you about the complexities of love. Zeeza has quite a list of accolades, starting with being named one of MP3.com's Top Alternative Acts of 1999 along with Anet (nominated at the Juno awards in 1999) Zeeza was also recently chosen for the MP3.COM Worldwide Compilation CD. Her last video, for her mega-hit song You're Always Trying to Numb Me, reached Number One Most Downloaded Video at Xoom.com and is now showing on Nerve T.V. (basement videos). She has 4 Top-selling CDs, and is currently in the process of recording one with guitarist Harvey "the Snake" Mandel, guitarist of Canned Heat, who also played with the Rolling Stones,Santana and many more . In the near future, Zeeza is getting ready to embark on a series of concert dates to play for the first time live some of her recent hit songs, including the elegant ballad T'aime Trop, which did a number of stints at Number One, and the raucous bayou seduction song, I'd Do You. It's only a matter of time until everyone finds out what the internet music community already knows about. Zeeza will lure you into her mystical music world of love and longing, seduction and spirituality, and you won't want to leave any time soon. Zeeza has more talent than self-esteem though... she will always be her hardest critic. She is filled with passion and love for music, but is less satisfied in "day-to-day" life. She exists in her music as a bright ray of light, shining upon all that listen to her angelic vocals. MP3 would have far less personality, spirit, playfulness, and interest... and yes, far, far less talent without her....she deserves to have complete happiness and that there are those out there that feel the same way.
