A Trillion Barnacle Lapse Biography
A Trillion Barnacle Lapse was a post-hardcore band based out of Providence, Rhode Island exisiting from 1999-2006 primarily consisting of core members Alexander Laorenza, Mike Lamantia, Anthony Ferreira, and Jonathan Santoro with a revolving door of additional members throughout it's existence. The band released 2 7" EP's and 3 full length records before disbanding after an open ended hiatus in 2006. Innitially a hardcore band under the moniker Tomorrow's Will, the original line up consisted of Santoro on vocals, Laorenza on guitar, Ferreira on guitar, and Lamantia on drums and changed it's name to A Trillion Barnacle Lapse, a self admited non-sensicle name of Ferreira's creation and self-released the four song 7" EP titled The Target With Plastic Casts. The record had an extremely limited pressing (approx. under 300) and feautured different paint samples and pop sickle sticks the band glued onto it's cover in Lamantia's garage. Next came a split 7" with Amherst band The Last Forty Seconds on the now defunct Pretty In Pink label, a 3 song contribution highlighting a more synthesizer induced post-hardcore sound. Another limited pressing, this split featured 3 different covers in red sleeves (one with a pop out pink coffin, one with a face on the cover, the last a tour only advance given to both bands which was brought on the ATBL/ As The Sun Sets U.S tour in 2001). Upon returning back from their first tour, the band began writing for what would inevitably become the band's debut full-length The Elemental Gearbot, released under hardcore mainstay Level Plane Records. Distancing themselves from most keyboard laden sassy post-hardcore trends of the time, the band reinvented themselves entirely with an electro driven, new-wave sound more Public Image Limited, New Order, and The Fall and a fuck of alot less Angel Hair. Hailed by fans and media as the "classic" ATBL record to this very day, the band saw their first exposure in glossy mags most noteably a near flawless rating in a 2002 issue of Alternative Press. Catching the attention of Sound Virus head Mike Ott, the band signed on for what was originally intended to be a one-off EP deal, joining the SV heavyweight roster including The Blood Brothers, Death From Above 1979, and Pretty Girls Make Graves. Recruiting a bass player for the first time in Eric Mcneil, the band recorded what would eventually become the second full-length Black Lava, a record which was raved upon by the then up and coming Pitchfork Media website acheiving a high rating and spawning more internet and street hype for the band. It was around this time the band opened for buzz bands like Enon, 90 Day Men, and Chromeo and also played frequently within the then thriving Providence art-warehouse scene. Eventually the band parted ways with original vocalist Jonthan Santoro and bassist Eric Mcneil (who both went on to form the short lived Roto Relief) causing a shift to vocals for Laorenza, with Ferreira handling more synth and guitar duties, Mike Lamantia staying behind the drums, and Ron Webster being recruited to bass. It was under this line-up the band recorded it's third and last full-length A Cruise In Heaven on the Electric Human Project Label, drafting in occasional live member Forbes Graham (of Boston-based experimental outfit Kayo Dot) to play trumpet on tracks "On The Docks" and "John The Baptist". It was around this time the second of the four founding members, Anthony Ferreira, departed and formed dance-noise-rock outfit Honeyhander. Remaining original members Laorenza and Lamantia continued to write and record with Ron Webster, now going under simply "ATBL", releasing a multitude of internet-only recordings before the band went on an indefinite hiatus with Laorenza moving to L.A and Lamantia moving to NYC to play drums for Brooklyn based Rockethouse. Meanwhile, Ferreira's Honeyhander disbanded despite a successful press and touring run and eventually mutated into solo alias Spanish Dancer, an outfit that Lamantia would later play live drums for. Laorenza moved back to Providence in 2007 and played with Lamantia's solo project Make Up, Break Up as well as reforming with Lamantia and Webster under PARTS, who are currently writing for a debut full-length.
