Civilian Death Machine Biography
CIVILIAN DEATH MACHINE was formed in the Pacific Northwest city of Vancouver, BC CANADA in July of 1987 by founding member, guitarist and singer Meredith Rollo. The band was formed shortly after Meredith left High School. Meredith's musical influences drew from a variety of genres including Punk, Metal, Rock and the vibrant Alternative Scene that was developing throughout the US and Canadian markets including Seattle, Vancouver, Portland, Chicago, and New York. Disillusioned with most mid 80's music, Meredith drew inspiration from local artists like 54-40, Soundgarden, The Young Fresh Fellows and The Screaming Trees, as well as established acts like REM and U2. Growing up on a steady diet of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Who, Black Sabbath, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan and The Beatles, Meredith found a certain calling from the "D-I-Y Attitude" of the Punks coming out of the UK in the mid and late 70's.... The Jam, The Police, The Clash, The Sex Pistols and Motorhead provided the "in yer face" attitude to prompt the young guitarist to take up songwriting and performing. CIVILIAN DEATH MACHINE began performing as an acoustic duo with Meredith recruiting long-time fellow friend, Stephan Nachtigahl, to assist with guitar and vocal duties. Occasionally, the band would call up another one of their dear friends, Rob Safarik , to handle lead guitar responsibilites and to fill out "The Wall of Sound".... Performing for audiences throughout the Pacific Northwest became commonplace, including their hometown of Vancouver to Bellingham, Seattle, Portland and up to Northern California and across the US Midwest. As the late 80's closed out, the scene was becoming extremely more and more upbeat with Mudhoney making an impact with their Mega debut, "SuperFuzz BigMuff", that finally confirmed, "Alternative Rock" was quickly becoming serious business throughout the Northwest. Around 1989, CIVILIAN DEATH MACHINE decided to "plug in", and abandoned their acoustic roots for a more viceral and raw sound by adding drums and injecting their punk-fused / acid sound through Hi-Watt and Roland JC-120 Amps.... For the next 3 years, the "rollercoaster" of the music business would weigh in heavily on the original founding member, as well as Stephan and Rob.... who would continue to travel around in the 74 Dodge Charger packed with equipment, and with the 400+ cubic inch Big Block under the hood, would serve to deliver them to the next gig.... Eventually, by late 1991, "the fading of the dream" began to subside as CDM watched other acts getting signed and would make it to "Super Stardom"..... Their local idols Mudhoney, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and The Screaming Trees scored Major Label Success.....along with a recently formed band Pearl Jam, Propelling the "Grunge Scene" to astonishing and dizzying heights, which some 17 years later....still has a place among today's scene.... CIVILIAN DEATH MACHINE recorded several singles including "Never in Doubt" in 1989, "The Trip Taken" , "Cheats, Thieves and Us" in 1991 and "Two Steps Back" in their final year, together as a performing band, in May of 1992. Staying true to its' roots....CDM called it a day, around mid 1992, some 5 years after its inception. In 2007, 20 years after its formation, CIVILIAN DEATH MACHINE reformed and released a 20th Anniversary Album, titled "History Repeats...Over and Over Again". History Repeats contained fresh material including "What is On Your Mind?", a punk classic "Subvert", and a Distorted version of "Shadows"....a track which, someday, just might find itself in a major motion picture release.... Today, Meredith still writes and records under the aptly-suited and provacative band name.
