Ernest Ellis Biography
‘Bad Blood’ is the first single from Dew Process’ newest signing, Ernest Ellis. It’s a little slice of what is to come for this talented musician from Sydney. Ernest Ellis draws a lot of inspiration from the beat poet who took the famous pancake tour of America, Jack Kerouac. That sense of exploration and adventure, and the waywardness of the characters permeates its way through both his music and lyricism. “That book is probably my favourite book and I love how all over the place it is. I read that book because it was Bob Dylan’s favourite book and he was a big influence on me and my songwriting. The element of travel and discovery really appealed to me.” Ernest Ellis stepped out on his own to fully explore his own musical world, frustrated with the limits of playing in a band. He now is able to take the Kerouac approach to the studio, trying new things and undergoing a definite shift in the development of his writing. He has spent many hours in the studio with production collaborator Tim Carr to lay down a few tracks that will form the basis of an upcoming album. Ernest Ellis uses the time in the studio to stretch his musical limits and play around with what sounds the pair can produce. The 23-year-old also takes a lot of inspiration from films, classic novels and, of course, musicians such as Beck, Nick Cave and PJ Harvey. His love of music is not genre specific – rather an appreciation of a good song and a creative approach. The dynamically charged ensemble produces classic songwriting structures interwoven with experimental flourishes and layered textures which in the live format are triggered by using various samples. www.myspace.com/ernestellis
