Lamya Biography
Lamya was an Omani-born Kenyan singer, whose versatile style, while not easily pigeonholed, has been described variously as pop, electronic, or dance. However, the careful listener will note Middle Eastern instrumentation and trip-hop influences on her music as well. She came to prominence in 1993 when she toured with Duran Duran on their Wedding Album tour. Her standout performance was the re-worked live version of their song "Come Undone", as performed on tour and on the band's MTV Unplugged appearance. Prior to that, in 1991, she had performed lead vocals on two tracks for Soul II Soul -- Love Come Through and In The Heat Of The Night. She is notable for her incredible, sweet voice, striking looks, and particular style of lyricism. She released one album, the remarkable Learning From Falling. A remix of the song "Empires" from that album hit #1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in 2002. Before her untimely passing, there had been plans for a second album, which would have been titled Hiding in Plain Sight. Lamya passed away in Oman on January 8, 2009.
