It's been five weeks since Adele's 21 sat atop the Billboard 200 chart. But it's fitting that the British songbird will be back on top next week in the same cycle that one of her biggest inspirations, Amy Winehouse, returns to the top 10 in the wake of her death on Saturday at the age of 27. It marks the 11th time Adele has held the top spot as her album's sales steamed past 2.7 million with the addition of 77,000 sales last week.
According to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, sales of Winehouse's breakthrough second album, 2006's Back to Black surged in the day after her passing, racking up more than 37,000 units before the Sunday reporting deadline. Winehouse also posted more than 111,000 in posthumous single track downloads, with Billboard predicting that her singles and album sales impact will be multiplied next week.
Next week's top 10 will also see the debut of Kidz Bop 20 (#2, 69,000), as well as the latest from rockers 3 Doors Down, Time of My Life (#3, 60,000), DJ Khaled's We the Best Forever (#5, 53,000) and 311's Universal Pulse (#7, 46,000).
The rest of the top 10: Beyoncé's 4 (#4, 53,000), Blake Shelton's Red River Blue (#6, 47,000), Jason Aldean's My Kinda Party (#8, 43,000) and Selena Gomez & the Scene's When the Sun Goes Down (#10, 28,000).
Three albums that debuted in the top 10 last week had major drops in their second go-round, including Chris Young's Neon (down nine spots to #13 on sales of 25,000, a 65 percent drop), Incubus' If Not Now, When? (down 12 spots to #14 on sales of 23,000, down 71 percent) and Colbie Caillat's All of You, which shed 67 percent of its business to drop nine spots to #15 (22,000).
It was also a big comedown for veteran reggae rock band Sublime, whose first effort with new singer Rome, Yours Truly, falls 21 spots to #30 in its second week as sales trailed off by 63 percent to 13,000.
Further down the line, Canadian psychedelic rockers Portugal. The Man come in at #42 with Mountain in the Cloud (10,000), and blunted rappers Kottonmouth Kings are in at #46 with Sunrise Sessions (9,000). Winehouse's 2003 debut, Frank,, also re-enters the charts at #57 on sales of more than 7,500.
At one point over the weekend, Winehouse's Black was at #1 on the iTunes album chart, but by the end of the reporting week Adele was back at #1, with Winehouse falling just behind at #2, followed by 3 Doors Down, Khaled, 311, pre-orders for the Red Hot Chili Pepper's upcoming I'm With You, Eminem's Bad Meets Evil project Hell: The Sequel, an Adele iTunes Festival release, Mumford & Sons' Sigh No More and Shelton.
On the iTunes singles chart, LMFAO continued to rule the summer with "Party Rock Anthem," which held on to #1 above Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)," Nicki Minaj's "Super Bass," Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight Tonight" and the Bad Meets Evil tune "Lighters." At #6 was Lil Wayne's "Hot to Love," then Pitbull's "Give Me Everything," Britney Spear's "I Wanna Go," Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" and OneRepublic's "Good Life."
Look for bigger numbers for Winehouse next week, as well as chart debuts from Kelly Rowland, Odd Future crooner Frank Ocean's major label debut and an album from country singer Eric Church.
