Scottish town wins Nokia's 'Good Thing' as Alexandra Burke will perform live in Peterhead
The tiny town of Peterhead has rallied together to beat off competition from over 500 UK towns and cities to play host to an exclusive gig with Alexandra Burke.
The Scottish fishing port's community of just 17,000 people launched an amazing campaign to win the concert as part of a nationwide vote held by Nokia to celebrate the launch of the Nokia N97 mini with in-built OVI Maps.
Local people were called to action by Peterhead's radio station, Waves FM as DJ Kenny King inspired the town to challenge towns and cities across the UK to take part. Peterhead's community spirit culminated in a runaway victory as 10 percent of the town's population voted, beating Southport into second place, Folkestone in third with Aberdeen and Preston finishing fourth and fifth. Famed for BBC programme, Trawlermen, Peterhead is on the North East coast of Scotland and the venue for the gig will be confirmed soon.
The competition was launched to bring local communities together and compete to win the concert. To ensure fair play, the town with the most votes in proportion to its population would win. Whether the town had a population of 50,000 or 250,000, over 500 towns had an equal opportunity to win the vote. Alexandra Burke will be performing live in Peterhead on 9th December.
Everyone who voted for Peterhead is now entered into a draw and winners will be chosen at random to win a pair of tickets to the gig. The lucky winners will be notified this week (w/c 30th November 2009).
The competition opened on 23rd October when Alexandra Burke unveiled a huge 40ft long signpost that was suspended in London as Nokia asked Brits to map out the nation's 'Good Things'. Throughout the coming months Nokia is bringing more Good Things, including getting everyone in the Christmas spirit by going back to its roots to bring a traditional Finnish Christmas to the UK.
