It seems like every Coachella set this year has featured a surprise guest. From Solange being joined by sister Beyonce, to Nas and Jay Z, to Pharrell bringing out everyone he's ever worked with... it's been a star-studded, headline-making two weeks. Last night though (20 April), despite what some outlets are reporting, Arcade Fire were not joined by Daft Punk. They were in fact pulling a prank.
Part way through the band's set, lead singer Win Butler announced "some very special guests and we're just going to bring them up front." Though what he said next seemed to be "Daft Punk", many in the crowd now claim what he actually said was "Paft Dunk."
Two men dressed in Daft Punk's trademark white suits and robot helmets then entered the stage, much to the crowd's initial delight, and began performing a slowed-down version of 'Get Lucky'. Twitter went into overdrive.
Arcade Fire brought out Daft Punk. I almost died.
DAFT PUNK JUST CAME OUT WITH FKN ARCADE FIRE!!! #COACHELLA
Daft Punk just came out with ARCADE FIRE😍
Butler soon interrupted the performance though, shouting "What the fuck is happening?". In case you're still wondering if it was actually Daft Punk, here's a clip of them clearly not pressing any buttons.
During the band's weeked one set, Butler had dedicated a song to "all the bands at this festival playing real instruments", so it seems likely that there was an element of mockery involved here.
Coachella came to an end last night (20 April) in Indio, California.
