The 65-year-old singer-actress, who has been performing her signature wheelchair-bound mermaid routine since 1980, has told Gaga to back off, tweeting: “The mermaid’s mine.”
The 25-year-old Judas singer recently appeared onstage in Sydney dressed as a mermaid, but Midler soon suspected something fishy was going on.
Midler tweeted: “I’m not sure Lady Gaga knows that I’ve performed my mermaid in a wheelchair for millions of people – and many of them are still alive.”
She then sent another tweet, saying: “Dear Lady Gaga, if you think a mermaid in a wheelchair seems familiar – it's because it is! You can see it on YouTube 24/7 – with ME performing it.”
When Gaga did not respond, the Beaches star posted another message that read: “Dear Lady Gaga, I’ve been doing singing mermaid in a wheelchair since 1980 – you can keep the meat dress and the firecracker t**s – [the] mermaid's mine.”
The veteran performer also vowed to discuss the matter with Gaga when they both attend the Emmy Awards later this year.
She tweeted: “Lady Gaga, let's drink this over [sic] at the Emmys in September. Fabulous mermaids can coexist!”
