Harry Wayne Casey (KC & the Sunshine Band) Wants a Little Credit From the Black Eyed Peas.
The Black Eyed Peas latest album, The Beginning, went into shops a few days ago but its already drawing a bit of controversy.
The album's track Love You Long Time borrows heavily from the K.C. & the Sunshine Band song Give it Up and, while band leader Harry Wayne Casey is a fan of the group, he would like a little of the songwriting credit for the track.
Giving a songwriting credit to the composers of a song that has been sampled or used extensively in a new composition has been a standard procedure for many years (and one that has cred quite a bit of litigation). Just last night, Syliva Robinson was nominated for Best Rap Song for Jay-Z and Beyonce's Empire State of Mind because it uses a part of her composition Love on a Two Way Street.
In a press release, Casey did give say that he admires the group. "I have recently learned that the Black Eyed Peas have utilized my song Give It Up in their new composition Love You Long Time which appears on their new album. I LOVE the Black Eyed Peas and am truly honored that my music has crossed over decades and many types of music genres. Will.i.am is a great producer and I am thrilled that he is a fan of KC and the Sunshine Band, too."
KCSB's attorney David Bercuson is working to achieve an amicable solution to the legal issues resulting from this situation.
