The 36-year-old insists that his life would have been very different if his mum hadn't been so supportive while he was growing up in Los Angeles.
He said: 'I would have been a notorious gang member.
'First I'd have to rebel against my mum and then rebel against the law. Rebelling against the law is much easier than rebelling against my mum!'
The star has been friends with fellow bandmate Apl.De.Ap since they were 14 and he says that he is overwhelmed when he thinks about the success they have achieved.
He added to Look magazine: 'I'm emotional for certain things. Family? Emotional. The past and knowing how far you've come? Emotional. I was at President Barack Obama's inauguration but I wasn't emotional until I saw Apl sitting in the audience.
'Suddenly I was like, 'Oh, look how far we've come!''
