In the year that Jamaica celebrates 50 years of independence and on the day Bob Marley would have turned 67, a poll reveals that he is viewed by Brits as the musician who's had the strongest influence on culture and society worldwide. Legends such as John Lennon and Michael Jackson were voted second and third respectively.
The survey commissioned by ting, the sparkling grapefruit soda and unofficial soft drink of Jamaica, also shows his continued influence with 60% of Brits having at least one of his tracks on their iPod or MP3 players and 25% having five or more. His top five tracks according to Brits were also unveiled with 'No Woman No Cry' topping the table followed by 'I Shot the Sheriff', 'One Love', 'Jammin' and 'Buffalo Soldier'.
With economic gloom casting a cloud over the country, the survey suggests that Brits have not only taken Bob to their hearts but are equally keen to adopt the Caribbean way of life. 65% of people indicated that they would like to see the UK embrace the Caribbean's positive outlook and chilled out attitude whilst 60% would like to see more of its native food and drink such as Jerk Chicken and sodas like ting and Old Jamaica Ginger Beer.
Brits are therefore invited to add some Caribbean sunshine to their life this February by joining ting's celebrations online with an array of activities including competitions, Bob Marley inspired cocktail recipes, the Bob grapefruit challenge and spotify playlist.
Heather Jones, Senior Brand Manager, at ting said, "Caribbean culture is absolutely central to ting's heritage and since Bob Marley is synonymous with Jamaica and the Caribbean it would be rude for us not to celebrate this music legend on what would have been his birthday! The research reveals that Caribbean culture is one that is close to the hearts of people in the UK – long may it continue!"
