Carly Rae Jepsen Is 'A Braver Version Of Myself' In 'Call Me Maybe'

First she caught the attention of Lady Gaga when she broke her Hot 100 record and then Carly Rae Jepsen knocked Gotye from his perch.

The Canadian songstress' inescapable "Call Me Maybe" just celebrated its ninth week atop the Billboard Hot 100. The record makes Jepsen's catchy ditty about giving a guy her digits the longest running chart-topper on the list this year.

For those keeping count of Jepsen's chart reign, Gotye's "Somebody That I Used to Know" spent eight weeks there and Gaga's "Born This Way" sat there for six weeks in 2011. Additionally, Jepsen's jam has just passed 5 million downloads, making it the #3 seller of the year.

The VMA-nominated singer recently sat down with MTV News and opened up about her inspiration behind the song. Surprisingly, she's not nearly as forward in real life as she is in the song. "Well I think in truth I've never actually been brave enough to go and approach a guy that way," she said. "But I kind of like to live vicariously through my music and be a braver version of myself in songs. And not only that, it's really, that kind of flirtatious nature, I think, is easy to kind of tap into and that imagination, it's easy to go there."

Even though "Call Me Maybe" has dominated the radio and the charts this summer, Jepsen was reluctant to label it the ultimate summer jam of 2012. "Oh, I think it's hard to pick just one song to define the summer," she said. "I love being among the playlist of acts. That's very cool to hear, but I think there's so many songs that I think define 2012."

Come September, fans will be treated to Jepsen's full album, Kiss, which drops right before she hits the road with her boss (and Summer Jam Games winner) Justin Bieber on his Believe tour.
