Carly Rae Jepsen Joins Train In Boy Scouts Boycott

Carly Rae Jepsen is joining the growing list of artists who are boycotting the Boy Scouts.

Last week, Train announced they were canceling a scheduled performance at this summer's National Scout Jamboree, in response to a petition started by gay Eagle Scout Derek Nance that asked the group — and Jepsen — to denounce the Boy Scouts of America's national ban on gay Scouts and Scout leaders.

"When we booked this show for the Boy Scouts of America we were not aware of any policy barring openly gay people from participation within the organization," the band wrote in a statement. "Train strongly opposes any kind of policy that questions the equality of any American citizen."

And now, after more than 62,000 people have signed the petition, Jepsen is following suit, (March 5) that she, too, is pulling out of the event, set for July 15-24 in West Virginia.

"As an artist who believes in equality for all people, I will not be participating in the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree this summer," she wrote. "I always have and will continue to support the LGBT community on a global level and stay informed on the ever-changing landscape in the ongoing battle for gay rights in this country and across the globe."

In 2000, upheld the Boy Scouts' constitutional right to bar openly gay Scouts and leaders from membership because opposition to homosexuality is part of the organization's "expressive message." In recent years, however, the BSA has come under increased pressure to lift the ban, including losing donations from corporate partners like Intel and Levi Strauss.

A spokesperson for the Boy Scouts of America did not respond to MTV News' request for comment on Jepsen's announcement by press time.
